Get Rid of MSN 9.0

Undoubtedly, everyone knows what Msn Messenger is, so i won't talk about it. Recently, Msn released Msn Messenger 9.0, the newest version of it series. The 9.0 version was supposed to be a better improvement of its former series, surpassing them in terms of information safety, virus protection, security glitches and speed.

As a loyal Msn Messenger user, i tried it. Unfortunately, it didn't satisfy me, for it wasn't even better then the former version. Instead, it brought me lots of problems, which made me change back to 8.5 version, but not without a whole lot of problems. Thus, i decided to write a guide on changing back to the older version.

Cons of Msn Messenger 9.0

The login problem. When you login, it says it can't connect to the server and gives you a whole lot of error numbers. You're supposed to re-download it or update your system registry. Sure, i did it and it worked, but it turned up again after a few weeks.

Auto disconnection occurs too regularly. Damn, even if you succeed in logging in, a window will pop out after some time and say "Windows Communications Platform has some problems" and Msn Messenger will auto shut down. It's quite irritating especially when you're halfway chatting with your friends.

Provided the above two happenings don't happen, don't count yourself lucky. Sometimes, after logging in, you'll find your contact list blank! Damn, i had to relogin in for some time before my contact list came back.

Resource hungry. The Msn Messenger 9.0 is bloody hungry for resources. After opening it, my whole computer started lagging when i surf the web. Compared to the former versions, it took too much of my RAM and Page Memory.

How to Change Back to Older Versions

Well, Msn forbids users to use older versions, so i had a bit of problem changing back.

Firstly, uninstall your Msn Messenger 9.0, that is, if you have already upgraded to it. To uninstall it, go to your control panel, choose add and remove programs and uninstall the Windows Live Pack you can see on the list. If it doesn't work, do a system restore. That should do the job.

Next, surf the web for MSN Messenger 8.5 or older versions, download and install it. This should take some time. After installing, do the following steps before opening it, if not you'll be prompted to upgrade back to version 9.0.

1) Left click on the Msn Messenger Icon on your desktop. Choose properties.

2) Go to the compatibility tab. This is how it looks :

3) Tick the "Run this program in compatibility mode for" tab

4) Scroll down the list and choose "Windows 2000".

You're done. Restart your Msn Messenger and you should be able to escape the upgrading process. If this doesn't work, bad luck, you'll have to bear with Msn Messenger 9.0.
