I installed Vista on my notebook last year, a 1 year old Hp notebook, model unknown ( too lazy to look up ), Core 2 Duo Processor 2.1Ghz, 4Gb RAM , NVDIA 256mb, with 250GB HDD. It took me around 50 minutes. Well, everything was fine, no corrupted files like XP, no error files. Later, i started installing other programs such as Office 2007, Nero, WoW, and bla bla....no much problems with them either. Now, let's move on to the good and bad of Vista, shall we?
Pros of Vista
1) It's good looking. Remember how XP looked like? All green and blue. Vista's metallic and modern theme definitely wins XP by a long way. The black and silver of Vista stunned me, not to mention the sidebar, although useless, but still, it's nice to look at. And then there's the underlying graphical framework changes which allow new features like live thumbnails. These awesome visual effects may require more power, but no grumbles at that.
2) It's less buggier than XP. XP had heaps of bugs all over them. I used to get bored everytime because my IE kept auto-close down after acessing the clipboard. Besides, there was also some problems with the cookies. Everytime you installed a program, you could almost expect some bug to come out. Vista rarely crashes, unless it's doing something it usually doesn't do. I encountered less than 10 bugs using it for a year.
3) The compactiblity. People are afraid that their hardwares doesn't support Vista. Nah, don't believe that. In fact, all my old hardwares which i used for XP supported Vista. I didn't have any problems using them. All my programs were also able to run smoothly on Vista. You can also run DirectX 10 and 11, which can't be used on XP.
Cons of Vista
1) My notebook became much, much hotter. Now, i know why. Its the interface chewing the graphics. My notebook's hotness increase by around 20%-40% ( that's not a small sum ) after i installed Vista. If you want to tune it down, you'll have to tune down the prettiness of Vista, which i'm sure, you won't want to.
2) Resources hungry. Yea, i didn't say it wrong. I mean resources hungry. Vista eats RAM for breakfast, lunch, dinner and supper. Vista's requirements are really dam high. It's supposed to need 1GB RAM, but i found out, you need to have at least 2 GB. If not, prepare yourself for slow performance. You all need graphics cards, which costs you another fat bundle of money, in order to get Vista's awesome graphics to work. In fact, you can get more performance out of XP with the same RAM as Vista.
3) It doesn't make coffee...nah, just joking, cause i can't think of anything more. Oh ya, the file transfer for Vista is a lot more slower. I couldn't believe my eyes when it took me about 25 minutes to transfer a 1GB file from my pendrive to the pc. Well, that can be solved by increasing the RAM, but its gonna cost a lot more of money, again!
Well, i'm done. Hope you've made up your mind. I'm tired already. Vista is OK, but you'll have to take the bad with the good. If you don't like it, then stick on to XP is my advice, or wait for the offical version of Windows 7 to be released, then get it. It's supposed to be a better version of Vista, requiring less resources. This is all. Thanks for reading.
