Finally, Digi launched their 3G services on 21st Feb 2009.
There were 3 broadband packages at the beginning, that is the Discover package, Explore package and the Extreme package. At first, there were a lot of negative comments about it, such as :
"being a newcomer to 3G in Malaysia, price cannot be competitive yet as the infrastructure cost is high "
"10 gb quota..... that's sucks for the price we pay "
"DiGi will be just another small time isp in Malaysia which will not be able to take on the megabits challenge.
It would cost them a lot for international leased circuits, setting up their own fiber infrastructure backbone and data centres. It's going to be a hefty investment for them. When their subscriber grows, they'll face the same big problem of sustaining the service quality and ensuring that bandwidth is enough for everyone. "
Well, before we decide whether Digi 3G broadband is good or not, let's look at its features first, shall we?
Discover package :
Explore package :
Extreme package :
Maybe the price seems a bit expensive, the quota a bit small, but don't forget to look at its service quality, ok? Well, out of curiosity, one of my friends subscribed for Digi's 3G Explore package. Luckily, he was in its coverage area, that is, Kuala Lumpur. People say
"curiosity killed the cat"
But, it didn't do my friend any harm. From what he told me, he was fully satishfied with its services. The download speed was superb, disconnections rarely happened and the internet speed was unaffected by the weather conditions. Usually, wireless connections disconnect every 30 minutes or so, but Digi 3G broadband was just like a streaming river. Sadly, it is affected by peak hours. During peak hours, the speed when down a bit, but still, it was faster than the crappy streamyx speed we have.
To make it simple, here are the pros and cons of Digi 3G broadband :
Pros
Fast internet speed, around 1Mbps to 3Mbps, depending on your package and area.
Stable connection speed, disconnections rarely happened
Better than other wireless services
Big usage volume
Cons
Speed capped down to 128kbps or 64 kbps after passing the cap
The price is still a bit high for some guys
Not meant for heavy downloading, only for surfing the web and some light download
Again, the coverage. Digi still doesn't cover rural areas, only big towns like KL and Penang
Despite these cons, Digi 3G is a good choice for those who are using Celcom, Maxis etc. Despite the previous negative comments, Digi 3G keeps on getting good comment about it now. Complains are rarely made on it services. I'm already waiting for Digi 3G to come to my area, so i can ditch my crappy Maxis connection.
